Hopewell Centre, a 64-story 216-meter (708 foot) tall skyscraper is located on Queen’s Road East in the heart of the Wan Chai District on Hong Kong Island. The multi-use tower was named after Hopewell Holdings Limited, the construction firm that built the tower. Construction began in 1977 and was completed in 1980. Designed by architect Gordon Wu, Hopewell Centre was Hong Kong’s first circular skyscraper, and at the time of its completion, was the tallest building in Hong Kong, surpassing Jardine House. At the time it was also Asia’s second tallest building. The Hopewell Centre continued to be Hong Kong’s tallest building until the Bank of China Tower was completed in 1989. The skyscraper features 840,000 square feet of office, retail and arcade space, as well as parking. Hopewell Holdings’s headquarters are located at Hopewell Centre with the CEO’s office on the top floor.
Hopewell Centre’s floor plan is circular and the tower is situated on a very steep slope with the back entrance to the building located on the 17th story. The circular design of the skyscraper offers panoramic and breathing views of Victoria Harbour. The building contains both office elevators for those preferring the fast route, or scenic elevators that offer spectacular views of the city and harbor. There is a front door lobby connected to Queen’s Road East on the 3rd floor and a back entrance lobby on the 17th floor connecting to Kennedy Road. There is also a sky lobby located on the 56th story that transfers diners to restaurants on the 60th and 62nd floors. The skyscraper features a circular rooftop swimming pool. The building also contains Hong’s Kong’s only revolving restaurant, the Revolving 66 located on the 62nd story. The restaurant was originally named the Revolving 62, but locals kept referring to it as Revolving 66, so the name was changed. Every hour the restaurant makes a 360-degree rotation.
The office space at Hopewell Centre features column-free design that maximizes layout and space efficiency. Single office plans are up to 16,000 square feet. With its prime location, spacious and efficient layouts, and panoramic views of the city and Victoria Harbour, Hopewell Centre is one of Hong Kong’s finest office towers.
Hopewell Center also provides a footbridge that links to a wide array of shops and restaurants in the adjacent buildings making Hopewell Centre a prime location for business, shopping and entertainment. Hopewell Centre is also close to many luxury hotels, government buildings, financial institutions and international banks.
Hopewell Centre, an iconic image on Hong Kong’s famous skyline, has also made its way into popular culture. The tower was featured in a music video by R&B group Dru Hill’s song, “How Deep Is Your Love.” The director of the music video, Brett Ratner, was also the director for the movie Rush Hour and the movie soundtrack featured the song. Hopewell Centre’s circular swimming pool is featured in the music video and also appears in an Australian television ad for Tattersalls, a gaming company that promotes Australia’s weekly lottery.
