The Lippo Centre, formerly known as the Bond Center, is a set of twin office towers located in Central and Western District, Hong Kong Island at 89 Queensway. Lippo Group is the current owner, which took over after the Australian-based Bond Corporation went bankrupt. The 44-story Tower One measures 172 meters (564 feet) tall and Tower Two is 48 stories and 186 meters (610 feet) tall. The office towers were completed in 1988 by its developer Bond Corporation. Lippo Centre was nicknamed The Koala Tree, due to the fact that the exterior design, which features four interlocking pronged sections, resembles koala bears climbing up the trunk of a tree.
The Lipo Centre towers, which feature a late-modernist architectural style, was designed by architect Paul Rudolph of Wong & Ouyang Limited. Rudolph’s goal was to break free from the traditional level sided skyscraper architecture of Hong Kong by adding protruding banks of geometrically shaped windows. Gerard D’Henderson, a Hong Kong artist who also designed walls for the Hong Kong Mandarin Oriental Hotel, designed bas-relief murals for the lobby. The two towers appear to cascade over the large podium, and its support columns that extend from the two towers to the plaza reinforce the building. The Lippo Centre’s exterior is comprised of dark blue glass that gives it a distinctive look along Hong Kong’s lineup of impressive skyscrapers.
