Nina Tower actually consists of two towers, the 42-story Nina Tower and 80-story 319 meter (1046 foot) Teddy Tower located in Tsuen Wan District on the waterfront, New Territories, Hong Kong. The original design of Nina Tower was proposed in 1994 and planned to be the tallest skyscraper in the world at 518 meters (1,699 feet). The original plans also showed the skyscraper as a gold color with a huge red heart sculpture hanging off the roof carrying the slogan “We Love Hong Kong.” However, the tower could not be built that high because of height restrictions due to the building’s close proximity to Chek Lap Kok Airport. Nina Wang waged a lawsuit against the government but lost the suit. The construction project began in 2000 and was completed in 2007.
Upon completion Nina Tower was Hong Kong’s fifth tallest building. Only Two International Finance Centre, Central Plaza Bank, Bank of China Tower and The Center are taller. Located in Tsuen Wan district in the region of New Territories, it is 15 kilometers north of Hong Kong Island. It is Hong Kong’s tallest building that lies outside the Hong Kong Island area. Nina Tower is also the world’s 22nd tallest building.
Nina Wang, owner of Chinachem Group and one of the world’s richest women changed the plan and decided to build two towers instead. The shorter Nina Tower is named after Nina Wang (King Yu Sum) and the taller tower is called Teddy Tower named after Teddy Wang, the husband of Nina who had earlier been kidnapped and never found. Although there are two towers with different names, the entire development project goes by the name of Nina Tower.
Nina Towers, developed and owned by Chinachem Group, consists of the two towers that rest on a common podium. The towers contain 1,600 luxury hotel rooms and Grade-A office space. The 9-story podium consists of banquet halls, exhibition halls and a high-end shopping arcade. The development also has plenty of parking spaces in the 2-story basement. Nina Tower’s upper 40 stories contain a 5-star 800-room hotel, stories 10 through 39 is for office space, and the lower 10 floors contain a shopping mall. Nina Tower is also connected to the L’Hotel Nina by a sky bridge.
The shopping mall consists of 30,000 square meters of space on 3 floors. On the first floor are six footbridges that connect to West Rail station, Vision City that is a project of the Urban Renewal Authority, and Yung UK Municipal Services Building. The second floor consists of 8,000 square meters of gardens, outdoor shops, an exhibition of wood fossils and activity area. The third floor of shops can be entered by way of the second floor podium garden on the second floor.
