The Peninsula Hong Kong Hotel, located in Tsim Sha Tsui District, Kowloon, Hong Kong, at the intersection of Nathan Road and Salisbury Road, is internationally renowned as one of the finest hotels in the world. It offers a unique blend of Western and Eastern hospitality within a luxurious setting and provides the most spacious hotel suites and rooms in all of Hong Kong. The hotel has won many awards including several from Conde Naste Traveler magazine. The hotel opened in December 1928 and is currently managed and owned by Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels. It is also the flagship hotel for the Peninsula Hotels group.
The Peninsula was built in 1928 to be the finest hotel located east of the Suez. Visitors arrived via ocean liner or the trans-Siberian railroad, with Kowloon being the last stop from Europe. The hotel, from its earliest days, has attracted the rich and famous due to its luxurious amenities and service. The Peninsula is famous for its signature fleet of Rolls Royce’s that are available for hire by the hotel’s guests. The Rolls Royce’s are painted a distinctive “Peninsula green.”
A 30-story tower with helipad was added as an extension to the hotel in 1994. The extension increased the number of hotel rooms from 132 to 300 and also added suites to the building. There are also 10 stories of office space, shops and other hotel facilities. The Peninsula Hotel also features world-class restaurants including Gaddi’s, a gourmet French restaurant, Felix, Spring Moon (specializing in Cantonese cuisine) and Chesea, a Swiss restaurant. Felix, designed by the world-renown designer Philippe Starck, offers spectacular views of the Hong Kong’s skyline from the 28th floor. An afternoon tea is served in the lobby, reminiscent of the British colonial era, accompanied by a string quartet playing from the musician’s gallery. The lobby is two stories high and features a plush carpeted central staircase and ornate columns.
The Peninsula Hotel’s fashion arcades features luxury brands such as Dior, Chanel, Gucci, Hermes, Prada, Cartier and Louis Vitton. Leading Hong Kong Brands such as Dickson Poon, Betty Charnuis Clemos and Joyce Boutique are also featured.
The Peninsula is one of only two buildings in the territory to offer private rooftop helipads, the other being on the rooftop of Shun Tak Centre. The helipads transfer the hotel’s guests to and from the Hong Kong International Airport, which is a seven-minute ride away. The Peninsula was featured in the 2007 Batman film, The Dark Knight in a scene with actors Chin Han and Morgan Freeman. The location was chosen in part due to its helipad access.
The hotel also features a roman-style pool with magnificent views of Victoria Peak and Victoria Harbour and a world-class fitness center with whirlpools, steam rooms, saunas, exercise equipment, massage, and beauty and health treatments. The business center provides meeting rooms for up to 300 people and offers a wide array of business amenities.
The guest rooms and suites feature a wide array of luxurious amenities including flat screen TVs, marble baths, fax machines, and Broadband internet access. The design is a bland of European and Asian influences. The Peninsula, like Hong Kong itself, offers a unique experience, where east meets west in one of the leading banking and financial centers in the world.
